New LED technology for deep cordless surgery

Enova Medical Technologies has announced that it has developed new LED technology for cordless surgical headlights that, for the first time ever, reaches light output levels exceeding 200,000 lux at 14 inches.

This breakthrough provides light intensity that is comparable to most 300-watt fiber optic xenon headlight systems that are commonly used by "deep cavity" surgeons, such as cardio, colo-rectal, neuro, orthopedic, thoracic, and vascular surgeons.

The company will introduce its technology during The American College of Surgeons (ACS) 93rd Clinical Congress, held Oct. 7-11, 2007, at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, La.

Enova will use its new lighting technology in the IRIS(TM) 2X Cordless Surgical Headlight, a new product being designed specifically for deep cavity surgeons. The anticipated commercial release date will be in the first quarter of 2008.

"We have aggressively invested in research and development to find a way to double the light output of our cordless surgical headlights. Our goal from the very beginning has been to meet the lighting needs of all surgical disciplines, particularly those with the greatest illumination needs, and to further free them from the constraints and burdens of standard fiber optic systems. Now, we've done it!" said Fariborz Boor Boor, CEO of Enova. "It is a thrill to be on the cutting edge of surgical lighting technology and to see the IRIS 2X come together. We look forward to making it available to surgeons in the very near future."
