Wyle has been awarded an additional year on its Occupational Medicine and Occupational Health contract supporting NASA with the extension bringing the five-year value of the contract to more than $54 million running through July 2011.
Through the contract, Wyle provides support to NASA's human space flight program through a comprehensive program of occupational/flight medicine and human test support activities at the Johnson Space Flight Center and the Sonny Carter Training Facility in Houston, the White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico and facilities in Russia.
A complete program of occupational health including industrial hygiene, radiation health, asbestos control, occupational health training and environmental surveillance is provided at Johnson Space Center and White Sands to include a fully certified environmental health laboratory.
In the past year, Wyle's team has provided special support under the contract because of a number of unusual events.
"We dealt with significant disruptions and displacement caused by Hurricane Ike's impact on Johnson Space Center and the Houston area," said Dr. Don Stork of Wyle. "We provided medical and occupational health support to Johnson Space Center recovery crews during the week the facility was closed."
Flight Medicine and Occupational Medicine personnel also supported the 2009 astronaut selection medical activities, the first to be held in several years. During the five weeks of selection medical assessments, the Wyle team provided or facilitated extensive medical testing both onsite and offsite for astronaut applicants.
Additionally, the Wyle team supported H1N1 Pandemic Flu arrival and JSC contingency planning and provided the STS-119 Hubble Repair Mission with real-time support at the Neutral Buoyancy Lab.
"We also supported audits by NASA Headquarters Office of the Chief Health and Medical Officer at Johnson Space Center and the White Sands Test Facility," said Stork. "The draft report for the Johnson Space Center audit stated, '... an excellent team approach to patient care. This is reflected in ... a staff that truly cares about those entrusted to their care. Their commitment and professionalism set the standard for healthcare in the Agency.' We're very proud of the services we're providing."
