HHS selects Smiths Medical to supply safety hypodermic syringes

Smiths Medical announced today that it has been selected for a contract award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for safety hypodermic syringes that could reach $10 million. The award is part of the government’s national flu pandemic preparedness efforts.

“Expert estimates suggest that the H1N1 flu could affect half of all Americans, including groups like healthy young adults that were previously thought to be at low risk for flu,” said Stuart Morris-Hipkins, president of Smiths Medical North America. “We are proud to use our capabilities to support the government’s efforts to protect as many people as possible from H1N1 flu.”

In addition to supplying important safety products, Smiths Medical staff will be available should an emergency need arise for additional products. The company also has set aside dedicated warehouse space for HHS to help ensure that products are available whenever they are needed.
