New multimedia application from ASM

Want to get the latest microbiology news, podcasts and video content in the palm of your hand? Now there is an app for that. A new application from the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) allows users to access and interact with audio and video content on MicrobeWorld, its award winning multimedia website, directly from their iPhones and iPod Touches.

“If keeping up to date in microbiology news and information is important to you, the MicrobeWorld app offers the most convenient way for you to do so on the go, in your car, at the gym or even in the lab,” says Stanley Maloy of San Diego State University who is Chair of the ASM Communications Committee.

This multimedia application delivers content and news items from the following audio, video and news sources available through MicrobeWorld:

  • MicrobeWorld Video – a video podcast that highlights the latest in microbiology, life science and related topics.
  • Meet the Scientist – an audio podcast where New York Times science writer Carl Zimmer talks with researchers about what they do and what makes them tick.
  • Mundos de los Microbios – MicrobeWorld’s weekly Spanish language podcast hosted by Gary Toranzos, Ph.D, from the University of Puerto Rico.
  • This Week in Virology – A weekly podcast about viruses presented in a manner accessible to everyone by two science professors from Columbia University Medical Center, Drs. Vincent Rancaniello and Dick Despommier.
  • Microbe Magazine – The monthly newsmagazine of the ASM, delivered to the iPhone as a PDF.

The application features background play allowing users to access other applications while listening to podcasts, downloadable wallpapers, the ability to follow MicrobeWorld on Twitter and bonus audio and video content. It also offers the ability to phone in and leave messages or questions for a podcast host, a feature available only to iPhone users.

The MicrobeWorld app can be purchased through the iTunes store for $4.99 and is available now. For more information go to www.microbeworld.org/app.

The MicrobeWorld app was created in partnership with Wizzard Media (NYSE Amex: WZE), the world’s largest podcasting network.
