Laerdal Medical, in alliance with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), has developed a second volume of pre-programmed scenarios for use with Laerdal's SimNewB (TM) neonatal patient simulator. SimNewB is designed to integrate simulation into the AAP's Neonatal Resuscitation Program and to facilitate training for treatment of other critical medical conditions in the neonatal period.
The scenarios aim at improving performance, critical thinking and effective teamwork that is vital to recognizing and managing newborn emergencies. From the delivery room to the NICU, the SimNewB simulator allows for hands-on training in realistic settings and is the ideal simulator for providing education and training for the specific needs of neonates.
The second volume of scenarios, entitled Advanced Neonatal Resuscitation and Stabilization Scenarios, addresses special situations described in the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 5th Edition, that may complicate newborn resuscitation, and conditions that require stabilization of the critically ill newborn beyond the initial resuscitation period. Learners will be asked to draw upon advanced knowledge and skills to effectively resuscitate and stabilize a newborn in a variety of settings including the delivery room, outside of the delivery room, and in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Gary M. Weiner, MD, FAAP, Clinical Associate Professor of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI and Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, believes that the scenarios afford opportunities to achieve real-time, hands-on clinical practice that is essential to delivering the best possible care for newborns. Dr. Weiner concluded, "This flexibility allows you to expand your simulations beyond the delivery room while challenging both novice and experienced neonatal care providers."
As clinical reviewers of the scenario product, Dr. Weiner and his colleagues commented they were particularly impressed with the focus on team training and coordination saying, "Expert teams have the skills necessary to respond quickly and confidently to any neonatal emergency. The Advanced Neonatal Resuscitation and Stabilization scenarios can help teams achieve these skills through training, practice, and repetition in a safe environment; they are a perfect compliment to our NRP teaching program...You simply can't achieve this level of training and preparation in the classroom."
Available for purchase this fall, the scenarios join Laerdal's growing portfolio of courseware training products for EMS, Nursing, First Responders and Hospital personnel.
