Dakim, Inc. announced today that it is expanding distribution of its dementia-fighting Dakim® BrainFitness(TM) System to Canada through a partnership with Tock Tick, Inc. Dakim's touch screen-based system is the #1 cognitive stimulation product in U.S. senior living communities, providing an entertaining and easy-to-use brain workout that is specifically designed to help seniors maintain their brain health.
The announcement coincides with National Alzheimer's Awareness Month in Canada and this week's call to action by the Alzheimer Society of Canada regarding the potentially devastating effects of the rising incidence of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. There are currently 500,000 Canadians living with dementia, including 70,000 under the age of 65. That number is expected to more than double in 30 years, costing $872 billion over that period for treatment and care, without aggressive intervention including risk reduction strategies to delay the onset of the disease.
Dakim BrainFitness is based on 20 years of medical research indicating that ongoing mental stimulation can help fend off dementia symptoms by forming new neural connections that can help compensate for brain aging. The Dakim system is designed to build that 'cognitive reserve' through a daily 20-minute workout covering short and long-term memory, critical thinking, visuospatial orientation, calculation and language.
Requiring no mouse, keyboard or computer knowledge, the system offers original brain-building activities filled with colourful images, stories, and oldies film and music clips appropriate to senior audiences. Answers are given with the touch of a finger. Activities are updated every few days to sustain interest; self-adjusted for capabilities ranging from active users to early-stage Alzheimer's patients; and designed with the appearance and humour of a TV game show to keep users engaged for sustained use.
"For the last several years, we have focused our efforts to raise awareness about the benefits of Dakim BrainFitness on the U.S. market, but dementia and Alzheimer's are a worldwide problem," said Rick Sill, Vice President of Sales at Dakim. "Our relationship with Tock Tick will make the system available in Canada for the first time, helping families help loved ones who are facing or currently coping with cognitive decline."
"There is a reason that the Dakim system has taken the lead in the U.S. for senior-oriented brain fitness: it has all of the science-based exercises with none of the boredom. That is key because a program that won't be used can't be effective," said Scott Richards, CEO of Tock Tick. "This is an important new tool to fight the symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer's in Canada."
