First-ever international Omega-3 Awareness Day

Omega-3 Awareness Day, the nonprofit is proud to announce its plans for the first-ever international awareness day scheduled on March 3rd, 2010 at the University of California, Irvine. Teams of world-renowned doctors founded by Carol A. Locke, MD are scheduled to speak on the science and health benefits of Omega-3 essential fatty acids from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. PST in front of thousands of students at UCI.

“Two things I tell every patient and every person, two things, if you only do two things, make it Omega-3’s and exercise.”

Leading off on the podium for Omega-3 Day is Carol Locke MD, Founder of Omega Natural Science and Center for Creating Health, followed by William Harris, PhD, cofounder of the Omega-3 index, Harvard Medical School Pediatric Neurosurgeon and husband of Dr. Locke, William Butler MD, and John Ratey MD, also of Harvard and author of Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. 2009 Comedy Central comedian of the year Kyle Cease will be MC’ing the event while providing the audience with some of his famous health related stand-up.

Public and medical awareness of Omega-3 is even more important with recent study on preventable deaths showed that dietary Omega-3 deficiency is an important cause of preventable death. Dr. Butler states, “Omega-3 can be easily replenished in the diet and many unnecessary deaths prevented by increasing Omega-3 intake.” Dr. Ratey adds, “Two things I tell every patient and every person, two things, if you only do two things, make it Omega-3’s and exercise.”

A recent JAMA article found that increased Omega-3 protects and provides for increased longevity with a 5-year life span increase in a group of people with heart disease. Those with higher omega-3 levels had the slowest rate of shortening of the DNA telomeres. “We have a powerful molecule that is a foundation element of our health,” Locke states.

The Millennium generation is the first ever to be predicted to have a shorter life span than the preceding generation. Locke states, “This has to change, we have to turn this around to save this generation because this generation has to save the world.”

“We are honored to launch the first International Omega-3 Day March 3rd at the University of California, Irvine from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. PST. We have an exciting program, and what is really thrilling is that we have the Millennial Generation excited and passionate about it. We will have great expert speakers, comedian Kyle Cease, five rock bands and a lot of attention by this young savvy generation. It’s a dream of mine to expose this new generation to Omega-3s. Information is power!” says founder Dr. Locke. The Omega-3 Day, Dr. Locke, her founding team of doctors and these passionate students have set out to change lives, save lives and change the world.

The behaviour of children in a recent study vastly improved when they were given 6 capsules of fish oil per day. Restlessness and school performance improved significantly from omega-3 supplementation and concentration improved by 33%! Even after 30 weeks of taking fish oil supplements, the children continued to show increasing improvement.

  2. Tom Hennessy Tom Hennessy Canada says:

I still haven't gotten an answer to the question of what happens when vitamin E is depleted by the supplemental fish oil ?
"A recent experiment carried out at King's College in
London showed that daily intake of fish oil supplement reduces the plasma concentration of vitamin E to below normal range."
"Daily fish oil supplement containing 2.1 g docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and 0.8 g eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) for a six week period."
"Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) concentration in the blood
fell from 20 micromol/l to about 10 micromol/l during the experiment. This raises the question whether fish oil supplementation increases the need for antioxidant supplementation."
