It has been only a few days since the Waverly council responsible for Sydney’s popular Bondi beach voted for a ban on smoking in restaurants and cafes starting this July. It is now Leichhardt Council that is responsible for the inner western Sydney suburbs that has come up with a similar ban.
On Tuesday the Council resolved to make alfresco areas “smoke-free” from 2011. These areas famous for their coffee drinking populations are plagued with the rise of passive smoking. For the residents and tourists, this comes as a ‘breath of fresh air’!
"We urge all NSW councils to follow in the footsteps of Leichhardt Council," National Heart Foundation Chief Executive Tony Thirlwell said on Wednesday in a statement.
"Residents and visitors of Leichhardt can really enjoy the great coffee the area is famous for without choking on secondhand smoke."
