DLVSC offers Zeltiq procedure to freeze away unwanted fat cells

Zeltiq™, an innovative technology that freezes away unwanted fat, is now available at Dermatology, Laser and Vein Specialists of the Carolinas (DLVSC) – making DLVSC one of the first medical practices in the Southeast to offer this breakthrough in fat reduction.

The Zeltiq procedure gently cools unwanted fat cells in the body thereby inducing a natural, controlled elimination of fat cells. Based on science developed by Harvard University researchers, this breakthrough is based on a vast body of research that demonstrates that fat cells are more susceptible to cold and are selectively, painlessly, and permanently destroyed.  Starting several weeks after the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a process called "apoptosis" and begin to shrink and disappear. The body proceeds to absorb the damaged fat cells and removes them through the liver.

"We've been involved in early clinical treatments with the device and have found the procedure to be extremely effective, especially on resistant localized areas such as back fat, love-handles and the isolated belly fat," says Dr. Girish "Gilly" Munavalli, MD, MHS, a board certified dermatologist and medical director of the Charlotte-based Dermatology, Laser and Vein Specialists of the Carolinas.  "The procedure is absolutely painless and our patients are highly satisfied," adds Dr. Munavalli.

"I am very impressed with my results – particularly for a non-invasive treatment. Within several weeks of my first treatment, I noticed that the fat around my abdominal area had lessened considerably," says Charleen Meyers, a patient who drove several hours for her treatments at Dr. Munavalli's clinic.  "I highly recommend the Zeltiq procedure, especially for people who have stubborn body fat, that diet and exercise alone do not seem to help," she adds.

Unlike many other methods of fat reduction, the Zeltiq procedure involves no needles, surgery or downtime.  During the procedure a non-invasive applicator delivers precisely controlled cooling to the treatment area thereby specifically targeting fat.  Treatment cycles last between 45 minutes to an hour and patients typically require 2-4 treatment sessions depending on the area being treated. Fat gradually reduces over a period of two to six months in most patients.

While DLVSC is well known for its Dermatologic care, Vein Clinic, and Mohs Skin Cancer Center, it is gaining national recognition as being at the leading edge of technology and clinical research for minimally invasive and advanced cosmetic surgical procedures. The center currently houses over 40+ lasers and energy-based devices for physician-performed, FDA-approved treatments ranging from fat reduction with conventional and laser-assisted liposuction, skin tightening, fully ablative and fractional laser skin resurfacing, acne, and laser hair removal.
