MedAire launches new course to prepare pilots, flight attendants for medical emergencies

MedAire, the aviation medical and travel assistance company, has launched the 2010 version of its Management of In-flight Illness & Injury course, which offers medical and educational best practices through the use of audio-visual tools, e-Learning, hands-on skills assessments and real-life scenarios to prepare pilots and flight attendants for medical emergencies. The course was updated based on student feedback, by flight nurses, education professionals and doctors from MedAire's MedLink Global Response Center.

“This way, when it comes time to actually use the training, crew will be that much more prepared to manage the outcome to a successful end.”

MedAire medical instructors—who have medical and aviation backgrounds—are trained in adult learning best practices so each student is educated according to his or her learning style. This is important in order to recall training during an emergency.

"The new medical training includes a full array of audio-visual elements and hands-on practice scenarios," explains Vice President of Education Services Richard Gomez. "This way, when it comes time to actually use the training, crew will be that much more prepared to manage the outcome to a successful end."

Course Format Options

For crewmembers on the go, classroom time can be reduced by supplementing with e-Learning at students' own pace, two to four weeks in advance of classroom training. For those who prefer a classroom setting, that option is also available.

  • Classroom-based medical training accommodates students who prefer in-person training at either the client site or a fixed-base location.
  • E-Learning medical training accompanies classroom-based training and accommodates students who prefer to save on classroom-based time and want to learn their own pace. This option plays to the busy, unpredictable schedules of those in business and corporate aviation.

With each course option, Management of In-flight Illness and Injury students will become proficient in the following aviation-specific modules: automated external defibrillator (AED), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), fitness-to-fly, medical and traumatic events, relief of choking, environment, travel health preparedness, victim assessment and membership resources.

MedAire courses meet worldwide regulations. Upon successful course completion, students will receive a MedAire certificate and also may receive certification from the American Heart Association or the European Resuscitation Council, depending on location.
