Neurological Institute at University Hospitals receives Neuroscience Center of Excellence designation

The Neurological Institute at University Hospitals has been designated as a Neuroscience Center of Excellence (COE), according to the Neuroscience Center of Excellence Survey sponsored by NeuStrategy, Inc., Chicago. It is the first neurological program in Ohio to receive the Stage 4 - Institute designation.

The COE Survey is the only one of its kind in the neurosciences and is the industry standard for evaluating program infrastructure. A record 175 hospital-based neuroscience programs from 41 states participated in the Neuroscience COE Survey.

Only 42 percent of programs received sufficient scores to be recognized as a Neuroscience Center of Excellence. A hospital's overall performance is determined by measuring program progress in four key areas: Clinical and Research Programs, Staff, Facilities & Technology, and Business.

The institute designation recognizes:

  • Commitment to technology and early adoption of treatment techniques
  • Expansive sub-specialization within clinical and research programs
  • A multidisciplinary approach to care
  • Dedicated technologies and facilities including imaging, operating rooms and patient floors, and;
  • Integration of research with translational programs to move innovation from bench to bedside

"Center of Excellence designees represent many of the leading, innovative programs across the country, and we're proud to be acknowledged for our multidisciplinary approach and commitment to the highest standards of neurological and neurosurgical patient care," said Warren Selman, M.D., Director of the University Hospitals Neurological Institute.

"The survey findings underscore the importance of UH's multi-specialty approach to care. In addition to offering the most comprehensive range of neurological specialists, UH has state-of-the-art neuro-imaging technology, and as a result, UH offers the most comprehensive range of neurological specialists and patient services in 15 centers of expertise in such areas as brain tumors, epilepsy, and stroke.

NeuStrategy is a consulting firm specializing in providing strategic support to neuroscience, oncology and orthopaedic service providers. The COE research is based on the NeuStrategy Staging Plan, a proprietary tool which consists of four stages developed to help hospitals measure and strategically plan program growth and achieve excellence in any stage of neurosciences program evolution.
