In the interest of protecting the public, the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) is notifying potential employers and the public that Brigitte Cleroux Marier has been charged for impersonating a registered nurse. Marier is known to have obtained employment as a registered nurse under false pretences in both Alberta and Ontario.
In Alberta, Marier presented forged documents to work as a registered nurse and performed acts that are considered dangerous when performed by an unqualified person, such as administering injections. To work and use the protected title of registered nurse in Alberta, a person must be registered with CARNA and hold a valid practice permit. It is CARNA's mandate to ensure all registered nurses in Alberta have the necessary knowledge and skills to provide safe, competent, ethical care. Marier has never been registered with CARNA and she has never held a practice permit.
In Ontario, she was convicted for similar offences and sentenced to six months in prison, fined $60,000 and received two years of probation. For more information on the Ontario case and to see a photo of Marier, go to www.nurses.ab.ca and click the Public Safety Alert link.
Although her current whereabouts are not known to authorities, there is no reason to believe Marier has left Alberta. She has pending criminal charges in Alberta and outstanding warrants for her arrest in both Alberta and Ontario. Anyone who comes into contact with Marier is asked to call police.
