Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today praising President Obama's announcement that the Department of Veterans Affairs will start making it easier for veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder to receive critical health and disability benefits and treatment:
"In every generation, America sends our sons and daughters to distant shores to fight on behalf of our freedom, our values, and our safety and security. Their sacrifice is a source of pride for our nation; their service is a source of inspiration to us all. We owe our deepest debt of gratitude to those who give their lives for our country; and we must do everything in our power to care for those who return safely home.
"Today's new regulations by the Department of Veterans Affairs will help veterans with PTSD get easier access to the treatment and benefits they need and have earned. This long overdue change marks a critical step forward for the health and well-being of those who have served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and all of our nation's wars.
"This Congress and this Administration have made a solemn pledge to the members of our military: that just as they refuse to leave anyone behind on the battlefield, we will not leave any veteran behind when they come home. In making this change today, we are keeping our promise."
