Today, Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) announced the launch of the National Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil to honor loved ones, raise awareness and provide hope, compassion and support for all those touched by lung cancer.
Building on the success of vigils held across the country over the past three years, LCA anticipates at least 100 vigils occurring simultaneously across the country the evening of November 4th, 2010. Volunteers representing all 50 states and Washington, D.C. will host vigils in their communities, sharing their personal stories to raise awareness and support for the disease during Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
"The National Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil is a very special way to bring families, friends and loved ones together," said Laurie Fenton-Ambrose, LCA President & CEO. "These events will honor loved ones, increase understanding, and further grassroots efforts to secure multiple millions in public health dollars for lung cancer research."
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death both nationally and in all 50 states—taking the lives of more people than breast, prostate and colon cancers—combined. Despite these statistics, lung cancer receives a fraction of the amount of overall federal research dollars.
"As a survivor, I felt compelled to bring the vigil to the national stage so that those living with or at risk for the disease know that they are not alone, while making it really easy for everyone to add their voice to the growing lung cancer movement," said Diane Legg, vigil co-founder and LCA MA chair.
If you are interested in hosting a vigil or participating in one in your area, please go to www.shinealightonlungcancer.org. LCA will provide the tools necessary to organize and promote your vigil. The time is now! Help us shine a brighter light on lung cancer!
