Canon to preview CR-2 Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera at AAO Annual Meeting

Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, will preview the lightest Canon retinal camera to-date, the CR-2 Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera, at the American Academy of Ophthalmology's (AAO) Annual Meeting (October 16 - 19). In addition to the CR-2 retinal camera, which is awaiting FDA clearance, visitors will be able to explore the Company's current full line of ophthalmic solutions in the Canon booth (booth #: 2208).

“At this year's show, in an effort to improve patient comfort and exam efficiency, we are thrilled to preview the CR-2 retinal camera, incorporating the latest in Canon's retinal imaging technology and enhancements in a compact and light design than its predecessor.”

"Canon understands the need to provide digital imaging technology of the highest quality to eyecare professionals," said Tsuneo Imai, senior director and general manager, Medical Systems Division, Canon U.S.A. "At this year's show, in an effort to improve patient comfort and exam efficiency, we are thrilled to preview the CR-2 retinal camera, incorporating the latest in Canon's retinal imaging technology and enhancements in a compact and light design than its predecessor."

Weighing only 33 pounds, the CR-2 Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera has a lightweight, compact leading-edge design, resulting in an intuitive instrument that is easy to use. The CR-2 retinal camera can be easily installed and takes up minimal office space, or for added convenience, can be easily transported when needed. The illuminated control panel allows medical staff to navigate operations in darkened rooms. The CR-2's energy-efficient white LED lamp for flash intensity uses less power than a xenon tube and lasts approximately twice as long, helping to reduce both operating costs and frequency of lamp changes.

The Canon CR-2 retinal camera incorporates dedicated EOS camera technology to create 15.1-megapixel retinal imaging. This technology has been specifically adapted to capture extremely detailed diagnostic images of the retina, helping eye care professionals detect and monitor ocular conditions. A single sensor handles all functions for infrared observation, color and digital filtered images for red-free and cobalt imaging.

In addition to the CR-2 retinal camera, Canon U.S.A. will display:

  • The CX-1 Hybrid Digital Mydriatic/Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera is the Company's first fully hybrid digital retinal camera with both mydriatic and non-mydriatic modes. With one touch, the operator can automatically switch between mydriatic and non-mydriatic modes, effortlessly utilizing different functions within seconds and performing several concurrent ocular tests. The CX-1 allows the user to take one-shot FAF (Fundus Autofluorescence) photography in a standard configuration, for both mydriatic and non-mydriatic modes. Fundus autofluorescence, or FAF, is the occurrence of autofluorescence in macular waste, particularly Lipofuscin. Examinations that check and monitor autofluorescent waste material are a key step in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) detection. Using the non-mydriatic mode not only saves time and resources, it also can make the diagnostic procedure more comfortable for the patient.
  • The CF-1 Mydriatic Digital Retinal Camera achieves high-resolution diagnostic images and outstanding operability. When attached to a Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR Camera (sold separately), the CF-1 is capable of delivering clear and detailed diagnostic images for virtually immediate review. The CF-1 offers exceptional ease of use and an ergonomic, streamlined design helps to achieve improved operation by motorizing procedures usually performed by hand. All CF-1 functions are integrated into a single tabletop unit with a power supply built directly into the base. The compact design allows for closer interaction with the patient and easier access to the patient's eyes.
  • The OPTOPOL Technology S.A. SPOCT HR provides ultra-high resolution, which can help give the doctor more comfort in diagnosis. Optical Coherence Tomography ultra-high scanning speeds shorten data collecting times and help to improve comfort of examination for patient and operator. The SPOCT HR has three micron axial resolution which, when combined with advanced analysis algorithm, makes SPOCT HR state-of-the art in SPOCT technology.
  • The OPTOPOL Technology S.A. PTS 1000 automated perimeter is a diagnostic instrument that offers precise and fast testing of the field of vision. The silent performing PTS 1000 features static and kinetic stimuli with all Goldmann stimuli sizes and all stimuli colors used in perimetry. Auto-detection of the eye position may be monitored with the built-in video monitor. A wide range of strategies and analysis tools combined with intuitive interface give the users a powerful diagnostic tool, whose handling they will enjoy. Built-in maps and the possibility of creating one's own map provide the opportunity to examine only necessary areas. Along with the predefined templates, the advanced printout manager allows custom layouts to be created and saved.
  • The RK-F1 Full Auto Ref-Keratometer simplifies the standard measurement procedure in just one step when using the Full Auto Mode. With a press of the Start button, the RK-F1 automatically completes the entire series of steps for both eyes: alignment, measurement and printout. The motorized optical head automatically aligns, acquires the readings and then automatically moves over to the opposite eye to perform the same function. The unit can also be operated manually to acquire readings.
  • The TX-F Full Auto Tonometer is very easy to operate using the Full Auto Mode. Once the eye is located on the alignment screen, just press start. The motorized optical head automatically aligns, acquires the readings and then automatically moves over to the opposite eye to perform the same function. The unit can also be operated manually to acquire readings.
  • The PIXMA iP4820 Inkjet Printer is ideal for any professional interested in a high-quality single function model which is not only easy to use but affordable as well. With the ChromaLife100 ink system, including five individual ink tanks, this printer can produce a borderless 4" x 6" image of superb quality with a maximum color resolution of 9600 x 2400 dpi in approximately 20 seconds. In order to help reduce paper usage and increase time management, this printer has the ability to Auto Duplex print and has two-way paper feeds as well. The iP4820 Inkjet Printer is an ideal addition to any medical office with its polished finish and overall functionality.
