New research blames billions in medical costs on obesity

The Associated Press/USA Today: Joint research from Cornell University and Lehigh University finds that "nearly 17% of U.S. medical costs can be blamed on obesity." The new study estimates obesity related medical costs at around $168 billion. A well-received study released last year estimated lower costs, at 9% or $147 billion. That study also estimated that "obesity adds about $1,400 to a person's annual medical bills." One health policy expert said the new estimates "highlight a need to invest in obesity-fighting programs" (10/18).
