Separation of family planning, HIV funding harms women, girls in developing world, advocates say

Advocates at a meeting in Paris about women, population and development, held ahead of next week's G8 summit, said that HIV prevention methods can be used to further family planning goals, Deutsche Welle reports. Some donors, like the U.S., fund HIV/AIDS and reproductive health separately, which can prevent coordination and disadvantage girls and young women in developing countries, according to meeting participants. The article includes quotes from Heather Boonstra of the Guttmacher Institute, Silvia Ssinabulya, a member of the Ugandan parliament, Gill Greer of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, and Jenny Tonge, a member of the House of Lords in the U.K. (Fox, 5/19).
