NPR: State Battles Over Abortion And Family Planning Heat Up
Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union filed suit in federal court charging that a South Dakota abortion law set to take effect July 1st violates both free speech rights and a woman's right to obtain an abortion. ... Meanwhile, back in Washington, 30 Democratic senators, led by Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), are asking the Obama Administration to clarify that it is a violate of Medicaid law for states to bar Planned Parenthood from receiving family planning funding because it uses nonpublic funds to perform abortions (Rovner, 5/27).
Reuters: Planned Parenthood Sues South Dakota Over Abortion Law
Planned Parenthood sued South Dakota on Friday over a law that imposes a 72-hour waiting period for women seeking abortions. The law also requires women to get counseling from what Planned Parenthood calls an "anti-abortion" crisis pregnancy center. Planned Parenthood provides reproductive health services, including abortions (5/28).
