Conference panel examines manufacturing of nutrition-rich foods

IRIN reports on a World Conference on Humanitarian Studies panel discussion about the manufacturing of nutrition-rich foods to treat malnutrition in the developing world. "Nutrition expert Steve Collins believes it is not only a waste of money for aid agencies to import ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) manufactured in Europe or the U.S., but also a lost opportunity to develop an added-value local manufacturing capacity," the news service notes. Jean Herve Bradol, the former president of Medecins Sans Frontieres, talked about the need to generate more publicity to raise awareness about malnutrition. Mark Moore, a manufacturer of RUTF in the U.S., and Maria Kasparian, head of Edesia, an U.S. NGO established by the makers of Plumpy'nut, also participated in the discussion (6/6).
