SGO's 44th Annual Meeting on Women's Cancer to be held in Los Angeles

Ovarian cancer treatment, health care reform, the impact of obesity on gynecologic health and the delivery of high quality gynecologic cancer care highlight the Society of Gynecologic Oncology's (SGO) 44th Annual Meeting on Women's Cancer March 9-12 in Los Angeles.

More than 100 oral abstracts and 300 abstract posters will be presented on topics related to cervical, endometrial, ovarian, vaginal and vulvar cancer at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The scientific abstracts are listed on the 2013 Annual Meeting Education Schedule at sgo.org.

•Breast oncologist and author Ezekiel J. Emanuel, MD, PhD, will discuss "Health Care Reform and the Future of American Medicine" on March 11. Dr. Emanuel is the Vice Provost for Global Initiatives, the Diane v.S. Levy and Robert M. Levy University Professor, and Chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania.
•Edward E. Partridge, MD, will examine disparities in providing adequate high quality care (including preventative care) for this year's American Cancer Society Lectureship (March 9). Dr. Partridge is Director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
•Gary Taubes, MS, author of Why We Get Fat and Good Calories, Bad Calories, will discuss his theory about medicine and nutrition, the roots of obesity and its impact on the treatment of gynecologic cancers.

The Future of Gynecologic Cancer Care
The 2013 SGO Member Forum will be led by SGO President Ronald D. Alvarez, MD, on Monday, March 11, from 9 to 9:45 a.m. in the Concourse Hall. Dr. Alvarez will lead a discussion about a new SGO report ("Creating a New Paradigm in Gynecologic Cancer Care: Policy Proposals for Delivery, Quality and Reimbursement") that lays out a roadmap to achieve meaningful reforms that will improve health care for women with gynecologic cancer and rescue an economically unsustainable medical system.
