Sony Electronics installs medical-grade 3D imaging solution for ophthalmic surgery

Sony Electronics, a leader in providing innovative imaging solutions for microsurgery, announces the first east and west coast installations of its end-to-end 3D imaging solution for ophthalmic surgery. Robert Cionni, M.D., Cataract Surgeon, Eye Institute of Utah, Salt Lake City and Richard J. Mackool , M.D., Senior Attending Surgeon, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, Director, Mackool Eye Institute and Laser Center, and Professor of Ophthalmology, New York University Medical Center, are the first to install this complete medical-grade 3D imaging solution for ophthalmic surgery, which includes Sony's MCC-3000MT 3D camera, HVO-3000MT 3D video recorder, and  3D display, the LMD-2451MT 24-inch LCD widescreen monitor with full HD resolution. The solution will be demonstrated at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Symposium April 21 – 23, 2013, in San Francisco.

"Sony's advanced surgical technology is a complete end-to-end 3D solution, from image capture to recording and display, providing a truer visual experience and enabling me to take advantage of more realistic depth perception and spatial orientation for training and education," said Robert Cionni , M.D., Cataract Surgeon, Eye Institute of Utah, Salt Lake City.

Designed for use in ophthalmic surgery and neurosurgery, this technology-advanced, medical-grade 3D camera system works with most microscopes to capture, record, and display 3D video in the O.R. Additionally, Sony offers four adaptors to fit a wide variety of surgical microscopes allowing for increased compatibility of the 3D camera. This enables hospitals and surgical centers to invest in this comprehensive 3D solution without having to replace their existing microscopes, avoiding extra expense.

"Sony understands the ophthalmic market and our specific needs and is committed to providing the innovative solutions necessary to enhance workflow and improve visualization of the procedure for everyone in the O.R." said Richard J. Mackool , M.D., Senior Attending Surgeon, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, Director, Mackool Eye Institute and Laser Center, and Professor of Ophthalmology, New York University Medical Center.

Sony's end-to-end 3D solution will provide enhanced 3D-quality video for surgical review, training and educational purposes. It allows doctors to review surgeries with patients, broadcast live surgeries in the patient viewing room and utilize live broadcast for referring-doctor training events.

The full portfolio of Sony's 3D and 2D solutions for ophthalmology applications will be showcased at ASCRS including the MCC-3000MT camera mounted on a surgical microscope and the HVO-3000MT recorder designed to capture and record ophthalmic surgical footage in 3D. Together with the LMD-2451MT 24-inch monitor, this system is the ideal solution for recording and displaying microsurgery procedures in 3D.
