Maisels 1 of 19 honorees since establishment of Hall in 2007
M. Jeffrey Maisels, M.D., was honored as a 2013 Legends of Neonatology Hall of Fame inductee. He was chosen for a career spanning 47 years of clinical care and research involving management of the jaundiced newborn infant. The award was presented at NEO: The Conference for Neonatology, a major medical meeting for neonatologists.
"Jeff has been a terrific representative for Beaumont Children's Hospital both in leadership and medical care for more than 25 years," says Brian Berman, M.D., pediatrician-in-chief, Beaumont Children's Hospital. "It's great to see him being honored as a legend of neonatology for a distinguished career dedicated to helping the youngest of our patients."
Dr. Maisels, a Bloomfield Hills resident, joined Beaumont in 1986 as chief of Pediatric Services at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Through the years, he has championed efforts to expand and integrate pediatric services across Beaumont's three hospitals and at outpatient sites. He led the expansion of neonatal intensive care and comprehensive programs for children throughout Beaumont Health System.
The Beaumont Children's Hospital was formed under his leadership in 2009 and he served as its first pediatrician-in-chief. Dr. Maisels' leadership and vision also led to Beaumont becoming Southeast Michigan's exclusive Children's Miracle Network Hospitals affiliate 25 years ago.
A native of South Africa, Dr. Maisels has lectured and served as a visiting professor at teaching hospitals and universities around the world. He is recognized internationally for his research in newborn jaundice and is the author of more than 200 articles and chapters published in medical journals and books.
The Legends of Neonatology Hall of Fame awards are presented by the Pediatrix Medical Group. Pediatrix is the nation's leading provider of maternal-fetal, newborn and pediatric subspecialty physician services. It was founded in 1979.
