Alfred Z. Abuhamad, MD, Immediate Past President of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), presented Presidential Recognition Awards to Marilyn Laughead, MD, and Carmine Valente, PhD, CAE, at the AIUM 2013 Annual Convention in New York, New York. This award honors exceptional service to the AIUM and to the ultrasound community. Its recipients are extremely active in contributing to the growth and development of medical ultrasound.
Marilyn Laughead, MD, received recognition and praise for her critical role as the AIUM's American Medical Association (AMA) representative. Through her meticulous work and diligence, the AMA adopted the resolution on "Diagnostic Ultrasound Utilization and Education" this past year. Dr Abuhamad said: "Many do not know the impact that Marilyn has had on the AIUM over the years as her work is not done on podiums or in the limelight, but its relevance to our organization is great." In addition to her appointment as AMA delegate dating back to 2002, Dr Laughead's involvement in the AIUM has stretched more than 3 decades and includes service on the Board of Governors, the Executive Committee, and countless committees.
Carmine Valente, PhD, was honored for his leadership as the Chief Executive Officer of the AIUM. Dr Abuhamad stated that Dr Valente "strikes an extraordinary balance between management and governance, which builds trust and strong cohesiveness between the office staff, the Executive Committee, and the board. He aligns resources where needed and communicates quite effectively both internally and to the outside world, which has allowed great relationships with many sister organizations. The role that he plays on a daily basis directly correlates with the success of the many goals and endeavors of the AIUM. Of all the presidential awards bestowed to extraordinary and accomplished pioneers and members over the years, this award ranks high up there among them."
