Proposed legislation in Congress would improve U.S. global health R&D

Writing in the Global Health Technologies Coalition's "Breakthroughs" blog, GHTC Policy Officer Ashley Bennett describes the recently introduced "21st Century Global Health Technology Act [.pdf], which would make several important and welcome changes to global health research and development (R&D) programs" at USAID. She notes the act, introduced in Congress by Reps. Albio Sires (D-N.J.) and Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.), includes several key changes compared with earlier versions of the bill, and she outlines key provisions of the proposal. While "[i]t is unclear at this point how the bill will move forward ... [i]f implemented, this legislation could provide promising improvements in U.S. global health R&D transparency, coordination, and financing that would help new global health technologies reach those who need them most," Bennett concludes (4/25).
