Beaumont Children's Hospital wins grant from CureSearch Children's Cancer to help fund therapeutic clinical trials

CureSearch for Children's Cancer has awarded a $20,000 grant to Beaumont Children's Hospital to help fund therapeutic clinical trials.

CureSearch and Beaumont believe clinical trials are essential to help children with cancer. In 2013, CureSearch supported 78 hospitals nationwide through their Clinical Trial Advancement Awards Program.

Explains Kate Gowans, M.D., section head, Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, Beaumont Children's Hospital, "We're grateful to CureSearch for this grant. CureSearch clinical trials offer hope for families whose children participate in cancer research. These studies reach patients, saving lives and changing the odds for kids today, and far into the future. This funding enables our group to open additional studies, allowing more pediatric oncology patients and their families the opportunity to participate in research trials."

Among adults, less than five percent of those with cancer are enrolled in clinical trials. Yet for children, more than 60 percent of those with cancer participate in some form of clinical research. Because clinical trials can save children's lives, CureSearch supports local hospitals, like Beaumont Children's Hospital, with Clinical Trial Advancement Awards.

Beaumont Children's Hospital doctors provide comprehensive care for pediatric oncology patients, including evaluation and treatment. They specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders and cancers in children, using a multidisciplinary approach which includes medical, surgical and radiation oncology.
