St. Mary's Medical Center honored with Healthgrades 2014 Women's Health Excellence Award

Dignity Health St. Mary's Medical Center has received the 2014 Women's Health Excellence Award™ from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. The recognition distinguishes St. Mary's as a top performing hospital in women's health and one of only 178 hospitals recognized nationally for outcomes of care provided to women for common conditions and procedures treated in the hospital.

Healthgrades 2014 Women's Health Excellence Award recipient hospitals have the potential to save women's lives. Compared to hospitals that performed in the bottom 10 percent from 2010 through 2012, Healthgrades Women's Health Excellence Award recipients as a group had a 55 percent lower mortality rate across eight conditions and procedures and a 21 percent lower complication rate across seven conditions and procedures. If all hospitals nationwide performed at the level of the Healthgrades Women's Health Excellence Award hospitals:

  • 22,737 women's lives could have potentially been saved.
  • 30,577 women could have potentially avoided in-hospital complications.

The award adds to St. Mary's list of recognitions received for women's health services. The Sister Diane Grassilli Center for Women's Health – the hub for all women's services at St. Mary's – is nationally-accredited as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.

"We are very excited that our women's health services have been recognized once again for outstanding quality," said Anna Cheung, President and CEO of St. Mary's Medical Center. "This is a wonderful tribute to our team of physicians and staff. Their attention to providing the most comprehensive, personalized service to our patients is the epitome of Humankindness."

Over the course of the past two years, St. Mary's Medical Center has received as many Healthgrades recognitions as any hospital in the Bay Area. Among St. Mary's honors include:
