Yesterday, the new NHS Choices Mental Health Apps Library was launched to the public. Big White Wall was among the first five mental health services to be featured in this online directory.
It is a key first step in extending digital options to individuals using the NHS, including 24/7 support in many areas of the country.
Currently, an estimated 25% of people with mental health symptoms don’t share these with their GP and 75% of those with common mental health issues go untreated. This directory will allow the public to more easily explore online mental health support options, improving access for people who are experiencing issues such as stress, anxiety or depression.
“We applaud the NHS for creating a space where evidence-based digital technologies are made accessible to the public,” said Jen Hyatt, CEO and Founder at Big White Wall. “At Big White Wall we have seen how digital services are essential to reach people with poor mental health who struggle to access treatment. We are thrilled to be a part of this launch.”
A multi-award winning digital mental health service, Big White Wall is available via mobile, tablet and PC. It breaks down barriers to access, such as mental health stigma, lack of suitable transport options or difficulties finding childcare. Big White Wall makes mental health care more flexible and personalised, putting people in control of their own health journeys, and has reached over 25,000 people since 2007.
“We want to offer people the chance to use apps and digital tools routinely to help them take control of their own health care,” commented Tim Kelsey, National Director for Patients and Information, in an NHS England press release. “There are online services already working for patients and we hope, by giving them our official backing, we will give clinicians, citizens and carers the confidence to use them. Digital platforms have a key role to play in improving access to psychological therapies and helping us meet our ambition of achieving parity of esteem for mental health services.”
The NHS Choices Mental Health App Library launch was championed by Tim Kelsey, National Director for Patients and Information, Geraldine Strathdee, NHS England’s Clinical Director for Mental Health, and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
