MAT introduces ECO-flow DYNAMIC Screenless UCV Canopy for modern operating theatres

Medical Air Technology (MAT) understands that operating theatres are changing. As technology advances, and the possibilities of what can be achieved within the sterile environment expand, new designs are needed to accommodate new expectations. Hybrid and integrated theatres, already common in other European countries and increasingly popular here, necessitate a less cluttered, more open-plan theatre design, with fewer obstructions in the path of imaging or laparoscopic equipment as it is moved around, particularly within the clean zone. The sleek, streamlined operating theatres hospitals are demanding must not only be aesthetically pleasing, but more versatile, more energy efficient and allow for improved infection control.

MAT is at the forefront of this change with its new self-contained DYNAMIC™ Screenless Ultraclean Ventilation (UCV) Canopy. In the DYNAMIC™, the glazed partial screens of the conventional canopy have been replaced with a uni-directional controlled airstream, generated at the boundary of the clean zone and fitting flush with the underside of the canopy at ceiling level. The airstream provides a barrier around the periphery of the clean zone, maintaining it and preventing entrainment of air from the surrounding environment.

The DYNAMIC™ uses the company’s unique ECO-flow™ technology to achieve an unprecedented level of performance for a screenless UCV canopy, combining controlled airflow with energy efficiency, all housed in a sleek, elegant unit that integrates seamlessly with the ceiling structure. Its design means pendants can swing easily in out and of the clean zone, ensuring maximum functionality and efficacy. Another key feature of the fully HTM 03-01-compliant DYNAMIC™ is its flexibility – it can be integrated into a new theatre at the design and build stage, or retrofitted into an existing theatre. Whichever option the client chooses, they will be receiving the UK’s most flexible, high concept, screenless UCV canopy.

MAT’s ECO-flow™ range of ultraclean ventilation canopies, available in three sizes in either the traditional or screenless option, was designed to support the NHS in its efforts to meet energy efficiency targets, and received industry-wide recognition in 2014 when shortlisted for two prestigious Building Better Healthcare awards, appearing in both the Innovative Carbon Reduction and Sustainability categories.
