The drug discovery process begins with recognizing a disease or clinical condition in which there is a lack of adequate medical treatment. Once a potential drug has been identified, pre-clinical research can begin. This process includes several stages; the first of which involves identifying and validating the prospective drug’s target through assay development, high throughput screening, hit identification and finally, lead optimization. Once the pre-clinical process is complete, the newly synthesized drug candidate is selected for future clinical development.

Older adults with elevated levels of brain-clogging plaques -- but otherwise normal cognition -- experience faster mental decline suggestive of Alzheimer's disease, according to a new study led by the Keck School of Medicine of USC that looked at 10 years of data.

Developing synthetic mediums for growing organoids

Organoids are bits of tissue grown in vitro, in a near-physiological 3D setting. The particularity consists in the fact that organoids retain features of the patient they are derived from, even when cultured outside of the human body. This is very different from what traditional, conventional cell culture has been able to do over the past 50 years or so.
