KGaA, the world's largest provider of dialysis products and services, today announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Gambro's worldwide peritoneal dialysis (PD) business. Gambro has decided to prioritize its investments in the hemodialysis field. Lockheed Martin awarded contracts to accelerate advancement of Nationwide Health Information Network

Lockheed Martin will take steps to accelerate the advancement of digital health records and secure health information exchanges with two new agreements to support the Nationwide Health Information Network. The contracts, which were awarded by the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), total $9 million over two years.

Fla.'s Jackson Health System struggles with nursing home and hospital losses; Advocates push marijuana cultivation in Calif.

The Miami Herald: As the Jackson Health System's "governing board prepares to vote Monday on a proposed budget for 2011, its two money-losing nursing homes stand as a symbol for the challenges the system faces as it attempts to cut losses. Almost 100 of the 289 nursing home patients in the Jackson Health System are uninsured. Half of those are undocumented immigrants under age 50.

Aetna is making it easier for members impacted by the flooding in Tennessee to refill prescriptions and access employee assistance and behavioral health programs.The company is monitoring the situation carefully, and will re-evaluate its medical and dental policies for members as necessary to help them access care in the flood-impacted areas in Middle Tennessee, where many people face evacuations from their homes.

Hospira Japan receives approval for long term use of Precedex IV sedative

Hospira Japan Co., Ltd. today announced it has received an approval for the long-term (greater than 24 hour) use of the sedative "Precedex IV™200ug" (generic name: dexmedetomidine hydrochloride). Individuals on long term incapacity benefit because of mental health problems could be identified by their GPs three years before they stop working.The research, led by Professor Jill Morrison at the University of Glasgow, also says that there is no significant variation across GP practices in the UK in the rate of patients claiming long term sick benefit.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard's plans for e-health mean that physicians will be able to diagnose patients using webcams over the internet under a hi-tech health policy. Ms Gillard launched her futuristic health plans in Brisbane yesterday. Under this $392 million health plan, families with home computers will be able to get access to an after hours online doctor using webcams and internet messaging services such as Skype from July 2012. Services would improve once the Government rolls out its high-speed national broadband network.

Daily dose of aspirin may reduce prostate cancer risk: US Study

A US study has found that a daily dose of aspirin may reduce the risk of prostate cancer, but Cancer Research UK has noted that regular use of aspirin can cause serious side-effects and should not be undertaken unless recommended by a doctor.Several previous studies have looked at the possibility of an association between aspirin use and a reduced risk of prostate cancer.In the latest study, scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, led by Dr Janet Stanford, looked at data on 1,001 prostate cancer patients and a similar number of cancer-free volunteers.
