Study finds 'inconclusive' evidence to support use of WHO-backed drug to prevent hemorrhage during labor

"The World Health Organization [WHO] should review its approval of a drug used to prevent life-threatening bleeding in women in childbirth because there is not enough evidence that it is effective," according to a study published Monday in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, Reuters reports.

Planned cesarean delivery for breech births associated with significantly lower neonatal mortality

Vaginal delivery for early preterm fetuses presenting head first, or vertex presentation, had a high rate of success with no difference in neonatal mortality compared to cesarean delivery, a new study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology reports. For breech births, however, the failure rate of vaginal delivery was high and planned cesarean delivery was associated with significantly lower neonatal mortality.

New sequencing approach can provide more effective method of BRCA1/2 mutational analysis

Individuals with mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have a significantly higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers. Families at risk have been seeking genetic testing and counseling based on their mutation carrier status, but the standard method of direct sequencing is labor-intensive, costly, and it only targets a part of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.

On the ever-lengthening fiasco list, the "exchange" problem is one of the worst. Congress told states to build these bureaucracies that will dispense health insurance subsidies and regulate coverage, but by and large the states aren't doing so. ... The exchanges do not merely subsidize but must verify who is eligible by income and residency, police compliance with the individual mandate and report scofflaws to the Internal Revenue Service; regulate insurers and enforce price controls; and penalize businesses that don't insure their employees.

Affymetrix, Inc., today reported its operating results for the second quarter of 2012. Total revenue for the quarter was $66.4 million, including approximately $1.4 million in revenue from eBioscience following the close of Affymetrix's acquisition of the company on June 25. This compares to total revenue of $64.7 million for the same period of 2011.
