Lifestyle interventions benefit overweight, obese and severely obese adults

Lifestyle interventions, including physical activity and structured weight loss programs, can result in significant weight loss for overweight, obese and severely obese adults, according to two reports that were posted online today by JAMA. The studies and accompanying editorials were made available early online to coincide with the presentation of these papers at the 28th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Obesity Society. The articles will appear in the October 27 print issue of JAMA.

Merck Serono to present Erbitux data at ESMO Congress

Merck Serono, a division of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany announces today that it will be presenting new data from several studies of Erbitux (cetuximab) in a range of solid tumor types including the first Phase II data in breast and prostate cancers. These data will be presented at the forthcoming 35th European Society for Medical Oncology Congress (ESMO) in Milan, October 8-12, 2010.

Metabolic Solutions to present MSDC-0160 clinical candidate data at EASD conference

Metabolic Solutions Development Company (MSDC), will present research at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual conference in Stockholm, Sweden on Sept. 23, 2010. The research indicates that the company's clinical candidate, MSDC-0160, promotes the proliferation of stem cells that create brown fat, leading to the creation of more brown fat. The research was conducted in tissue cultures and mice.

Contrave added to diet and exercise regimen can induce significant weight loss

Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc. announced the online publication of results from its COR-BMOD trial of Contrave (naltrexone SR/bupropion SR) in the journal Obesity. The COR-BMOD trial evaluated intensive behavior modification plus Contrave32 (32mg naltrexone sustained release (SR)/360mg bupropion SR) compared to BMOD plus placebo, in 793 overweight or obese patients.

Orexigen's Contrave COR-I trial results published online in journal Lancet

Orexigen® Therapeutics, Inc. announced that results from its COR-I trial of Contrave® were published online today in the journal Lancet. COR-I was the largest of the four, 56-week, Phase 3 trials supporting the New Drug Application for Contrave, currently under review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Results show that patients taking Contrave were two to three times more likely to lose at least 5% or 10% of their body weight compared to those taking placebo, on both an intent-to-treat (ITT) and completers basis.

Scientists develop obesity drug without neurological side effects

The drug rimonabant was developed as a treatment for obesity and its myriad of serious health consequences. Despite having its desired effects on weight, which it decreased, and on levels of glucose and fats in the blood, rimonabant was never approved for use in the US because of serious neurological side effects including depression and anxiety. Now, a team of researchers, led by George Kunos, at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, and Alexandros Makriyannis, at Northeastern University, Boston, have developed a drug that has the same positive effects in mice on levels of glucose and fats in the blood as rimonabant but none of the neurological side effects.

Survey: 66% of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer are now tested for KRAS

Merck Serono, a division of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, has revealed new results from a global survey demonstrating that 66% of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) are now tested for KRAS to determine if they could benefit from a personalized therapy, such as Erbitux® (cetuximab). This represents a 50% increase in levels of KRAS testing in just one year.
