FDA grants orphan drug designation to ERYTECH’s lead product for AML treatment

ERYTECH Pharma, a French biopharmaceutical company that develops innovative treatments for acute leukemia and other oncology indications with unmet medical needs, announces that its lead product GRASPA®/ERY-ASP has been granted Orphan Drug Designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), an aggressive form of blood cancer.

Study: Obesity causes changes in colon that may lead to colorectal cancer

Obesity, rather than diet, causes changes in the colon that may lead to colorectal cancer, according to a study in mice by the National Institutes of Health. The finding bolsters the recommendation that calorie control and frequent exercise are not only key to a healthy lifestyle, but a strategy to lower the risk for colon cancer, the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States.

While patients diagnosed with bladder cancer usually face a favorable prognosis, many experience recurrence after treatment. Because frequent, painful screenings are needed to identify recurrences, the ablility to identify patients at high risk of recurrent cancer could help to improve quality of life for all bladder cancer patients.

Dvorak, MD, senior investigator in the Center for Vascular Biology Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and former chairman of BIDMC's Department of Pathology, is one of eight scientists to win the 2014 Canada Gairdner Awards, which recognize some of the most significant medical discoveries from around the world. Awarded by the Gairdner Foundation, based in Canada, the awards are considered among the most prestigious international awards in medical research.
