Ever since the first genome sequence was published in 2001, scientists have been working to figure out what the sequence means. An analogy is walking across a desert and finding a large book in a language you don't know, then trying to figure out what the book is saying.

For decades, scientists have thought the faulty neural wiring that predisposes individuals to behavioral disorders like autism and psychiatric diseases like schizophrenia must occur during development. Even so, no one has ever shown that a risk gene for the disease actually disrupts brain development.

UCSC professors receive $1.8M grant under NHGRI's genome sequencing technology development programme

Oxford Nanopore Technologies congratulates our collaborators Professor Mark Akeson and Professor David Deamer of the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) on receiving a grant of $1.1 million, and Professor Jene Golovchenko of the University of Harvard on receiving $745,000 following on from a previous grant of $6.5 million.

NHGRI grants BioNanomatrix $833,490 for commercial development of its NanoAnalyzer system

BioNanomatrix, Inc., a developer of breakthrough single-molecule genomic analysis technology, today announced receipt of two new supplemental grants totaling $833,490 from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). The funding is intended to support further commercial development of BioNanomatrix's nanoscale whole genome imaging and analysis platform.

NIH grants Affymetrix $24.8M for genotyping project

Affymetrix, Inc. today announced that the Kaiser Permanente Research Program on Genes, Environment, and Health (RPGEH) and the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) have entered into an agreement with Affymetrix to support genome-wide analyses of DNA samples from 100,000 Kaiser Permanente members.

Illumina and Solexa deny patent infringement allegations

Illumina, Inc. today announced that, together with Solexa its wholly owned subsidiary, it has filed its initial response to the lawsuit brought by Life Technologies and Applied Biosystems on September 21, 2009 in U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Delaware. In their answer, Illumina and Solexa have denied all of Life’s and AB’s allegations of patent infringement, and have asserted that AB’s licensed patents are invalid.

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have for the first time identified the genetic mechanisms involved in the formation and survival of L-form bacteria. Their findings are described in a study published October 6 in the journal PLoS ONE.
