Tolerx presents otelixizumab preclinical research at 46th EASD

Tolerx, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapies to treat autoimmune diseases and cancer by modulating T cell activity, today announced the presentation of preclinical research describing the mechanism of action of otelixizumab at the 46th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). FDA grants ZIOPHARM's darinaparsin Orphan Drug Designation for peripheral T-cell Lymphoma treatment

ZIOPHARM Oncology, Inc. announced today that the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Orphan Drug Designation to darinaparsin (Zinapar™ or ZIO-101) for the treatment of peripheral T-cell Lymphoma (PTCL). The United States Orphan Drug Act of 1983 was created to provide incentives for companies to develop and market treatments for diseases or conditions affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the United States.

Over one in three diabetics do not take insulin as prescribed

More than one in three diabetes patients skip doses or fail to take their insulin as prescribed, stating that they have done so on average three times in the last month, and 77 percent of physicians estimate that in reality this number could be as high as six doses, according to the Global Attitudes of Patients and Physicians in Insulin Therapy (GAPP™) survey, released today by Novo Nordisk.

Abbott announces positive results of bioresorbable vascular device at TCT conference

Abbott today announced positive nine-month results from the first 45 patients enrolled in the second stage of the ABSORB trial. At nine months, Abbott's bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) demonstrated strong results that remained consistent with the six-month data from the same 45-patient group, with the rate of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) unchanged at 4.4 percent and no reports of blood clots (thromboses).

Three-year data from the prospective, randomized LEADERS trial demonstrate the equivalence of a biolimus A9-eluting stent with a biodegradable polymer vs. a sirolimus-eluting stent with a durable polymer. Study finds adverse cardiac events rare during year after negative cardiac CTA scan

Adverse cardiac events are rare one year after patients are admitted to the emergency room with low-to-moderate risk chest pain and are discharged due to a negative cardiac computed tomography angiogram (CTA), according to a study in the October issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology. Cardiac CTA is a noninvasive heart-imaging test that determines whether fatty deposits or calcium deposits have built up in the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle.
