USPTO issues patent covering methods for enhancing RNA silencing activity of RNAi agents

Silence Therapeutics plc announces the issuance of United States patent 7,732,593, titled Methods and Compositions For Controlling Efficacy of RNA Silencing, by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The issued patent, which is based on the seminal research of Phillip D. Zamore, Ph.D., Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, the Gretchen Stone Cook Chair of Biomedical Sciences, and Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Pharmacology at University of Massachusetts Medical School, generally claims methods of enhancing the RNA silencing activity of RNA interference (RNAi) agents through certain structural modifications.

Cubist to oppose Teva’s attempt to add new defense in patent infringement litigation

Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it will oppose a motion filed by the Teva defendants to amend their answer to add a new defense in the patent litigation between Cubist and Teva pending in the US District Court for the District of Delaware. A motion for leave to amend the answer is a request to be permitted to add a new allegation. The Teva defendants seek leave to amend their answer to allege that US Patent Nos. 6,468,967 and 6,852,689 are unenforceable due to inequitable conduct.

USPTO grants ISCO patent to International Stem Cell's hpSC

Human parthenogenetic stem cells are a new type of pluripotent stem cell that allows immune matching to potentially solve critical immune rejection problems, and does not involve the ethical issues that surround the use of fertilized human embryos.

US Court lifts stay on Cook's endovascular technology patent infringement case against Endologix

The United States District Court, Southern District of Indiana, has ruled in favor of Cook Incorporated in its decision to lift the stay on Cook's patent infringement case against Endologix, Inc.. With this ruling, the case, filed by Cook on October 6, 2009, will now proceed. The complaint claims infringement by Endologix of two Cook patents for endovascular technologies, one of Cook's leading technology portfolios.

Lawsuit to be launched over breast cancer gene patent

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are two genes that have been identified to hold a key to women’s susceptibility to get breast or ovarian cancer. Changes also known as mutations in these genes are significant in women who go on to develop breast or ovarian cancer. Melbourne-based company Genetic Technologies Limited (GTL) has the exclusive license from American biotechnology company Myriad Genetics to carry out testing for the genes in Australia. Myriad holds a patent for these genes.
