First StemSource Cell Bank in U.S. open

BioLife Cell Bank, LLC has opened the first U.S. StemSource® Cell Bank, which offers patients a way to safely and affordably store their own adipose (fat) tissue or their own naturally occurring adipose (fat) tissue-derived stem and regenerative cells. This gives patients and physicians easy, multi-use access to cells and tissue for future approved or allowed reconstructive fat grafting or augmentation procedures using the patients' own cells and/or tissue.

Effects of periodic constrictions on drift, diffusion in systems experiencing driving force

An understanding of particle diffusion in the presence of constrictions is essential in fields as diverse as drug delivery, cellular biology, nanotechnology, materials engineering, and spread of pollutants in the soil. When a driving force is applied, displacement of particles occurs as well as diffusion. A paper in the Journal of Chemical Physics, which is published by the American Institute of Physics (AIP), quantifies the effects of periodic constrictions on drift and diffusion in systems experiencing a driving force.

UCLA research sheds light on how brain tells time

The ability to tell time is fundamental to how humans interact with each other and the world. Timing plays an important role, for example, in our ability to recognize speech patterns and to create music. Patterns are an essential part of timing. The human brain easily learns patterns, allowing us to recognize familiar patterns of shapes, like faces, and timed patterns, like the rhythm of a song. But exactly how the brain keeps time and learns patterns remains a mystery.

Severity of appendicitis can be predicted from blood sample, shows thesis

The symptoms of appendicitis are often diffuse and it can be difficult to obtain an accurate diagnosis early in the course of the disease. It may be possible to predict the severity from a blood sample, and in this way determine the treatment on an individual basis. This is the conclusion of a thesis presented at the University of Gothenburg, sweden.

Study shows effective and efficient methods for producing recombinant proteins

A shift in the life science market has begun to steer cell culture scientists to re-evaluate their use of native transferrin and iron chelators to pursue recombinant alternatives. Transferrin regulates the uptake, transport and utilization of iron for cellular function, increasing cell growth and productivity. Native transferrin found in bovine or human serum has been widely used in cell culture for these added benefits. However, regulatory issues continue to arise with the use of native transferrin due to blood-borne pathogens.

In a preliminary and apparently first-of-its-kind study, Agricultural Research Service research physiologist Charles B. Stephensen and colleagues have developed a preliminary model that predicts an individual's vitamin D requirements.

In research led by a Saint Louis University investigator, molecular biologists have discovered a way to harness the enzyme thrombin's anti-blood clotting properties.
