Genvec to sell 8,000,000 shares to develop its TNFerade clinical program

GenVec, Inc. (Nasdaq: GNVC) announced today that it has entered into a purchase agreement with a single institutional investor for the sale of 8,000,000 shares of its common stock and warrants to purchase 4,000,000 shares of its common stock. The shares of common stock and warrants are being offered in units consisting of one share of common stock and 0.50 warrants to purchase one share of common stock at a price of $0.75 per unit. This represents a discount of approximately 8.3% to the closing price of GenVec common stock on August 26, 2009. The warrants have a term of five years and an exercise price of $0.828 per share.

NYP/Weill Cornell research reveals that prolonged QRS duration indicates abnormal pumping of the heart

QRS duration (QRSd) is one of several measures of heart function recorded during a routine electrocardiogram (ECG). It is a composite of waves showing the length of time it takes for an electrical signal to get all the way through the pumping chambers of the heart. Prolonged QRSd is a sign of an abnormal electrical system of the heart and is often found when the heart isn't pumping efficiently.

Scientific dogma has long asserted that females are born with their entire lifetime's supply of eggs, and once they're gone, they're gone. New findings by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, published online Aug. 27 in Science, suggest that in nematode worms, at least, this does not hold true.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine receives $11.2 million NIH grant to study genes associated with longevity

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University a five-year, $11.2 million grant to study the impact of damage to DNA on aging and disease. Research funded by this grant, and conducted by a consortium of scientists, could reveal the role of genome maintenance systems in delaying aging and will begin to explore novel interventions to maintain health in old age.
