bitop's Ectoin allergy nasal spray reduces symptoms of acute allergic rhinitis in two-week crossover study

bitop AG, a biotech company specializing in the development of Ectoin®-containing medical devices, reports that Ectoin allergy nasal spray has been shown to significantly reduce symptoms of acute allergic rhinitis in a two-week observational, randomized, comparative crossover study with 50 patients suffering from acute allergic rhinitis. Based on this study, bitop performed a clinical trial on eyes drops and nasal spray in humans using an environmental exposure chamber (EEC) model.

Allergan receives UK MHRA authorisation of BOTOX for prophylaxis of headache in chronic migraine

Allergan is pleased to announce that BOTOX® (botulinum toxin type A) has been licensed by the MHRA in the UK for the prophylaxis of headaches in adults who have chronic migraine (headaches on at least 15 days per month of which at least 8 days are with migraine). This is the first licence worldwide of BOTOX® for this indication, and is also the first prophylactic (preventative) treatment to receive a specific licence for patients with chronic migraine.

HPV DNA testing for precancer, cervical cancer is more sensitive than cytology testing: Study

HPV DNA testing for precancers and cervical cancers is over 50 per cent more sensitive than cytology testing for the same conditions a community-based study in Mexico has revealed. Results of the largest HPV DNA primary screening study ever to be performed in a Latin American country point to the readiness of HPV DNA testing for large-scale implementation in Mexico and are published online today (8 July 2010) in Cancer, Causes and Controls.

PhotoMedex receives multi-million dollar order from AMICO Group to purchase XTRAC laser systems

PhotoMedex, Inc. announced that the Company has received from AMICO Group, its distributor in the Middle East, a multi-million dollar order to purchase XTRAC laser systems that will be installed in hospitals throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The order includes customary terms and conditions, including advanced payments and letters of credit covering the purchase order. Delivery is expected to be in the third and fourth quarters of this year.

Small business says 10 percent tanning tax that starts today is overcooked

As of July 1, tanning salons have to charge customers a 10 percent tax on their services to help pay for part of the new health reform law and that requirement has attracted the howls of small business, NPR reports. "Tanning salon owners are outraged. They say the new tax is the last thing they need in a struggling economy.

United Therapeutics Corporation and Lee's Pharmaceutical Holdings Ltd. announced today that they have entered into an exclusive agreement for the distribution of Remodulin (treprostinil) Injection in China. Remodulin is a subcutaneously or intravenously administered prostacyclin analogue for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. University College London neurology professor becomes first recipient of Lord Brain Memorial Medal

Andrew Lees, Professor of Neurology at University College London, is to be the first ever recipient of the Lord Brain Memorial Medal - awarded for the scientific contributions he has made to the field of movement disorders within the UK. Twelve dermatology residents from leading medical schools around the country each received a $40,000, one-year fellowship grant to study medical dermatology. The fellowships, awarded by the National Psoriasis Foundation, provide support to eligible institutions to develop and enhance opportunities for physicians training for careers in medical dermatology.

Bortezomib may offer hope for treating inflammatory diseases: New research

Those looking for a new treatment for a range of inflammatory diseases like arthritis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and lupus may need to look no further than a drug already available for treating cancer. In a research report published in the July 2010 print issue of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, Japanese scientists use mice to show that bortezomib, currently used to treat cancers that affect white blood cells, induces cell death only in harmful (active and proliferating) T cells, leaving the rest unharmed.
