New research shows no increased danger for egg allergic children who take flu shots

All children should have flu shots, even if they have an egg allergy, and it's now safe to get them without special precautions. This finding is from the latest update on the safety of the flu vaccine for allergic patients, published in the October issue of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the official journal of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

A*STAR, NSC and NTU to expand skin research in Singapore

Singapore is committing close to S$100 million to skin research, with the announcement of the Skin Research Institute of Singapore. A collaboration between the Agency for Science Technology and Research, National Skin Centre and Nanyang Technological University, the SRIS will harness the expertise of scientists, clinicians and engineers to foster and conduct high impact, inter-disciplinary skin research designed to translate into improved health outcomes and quality of life.

Study: Structural defect in skin cells can contribute to allergy development

In a new study published in Nature Genetics, Northwestern Medicine and Tel Aviv University scientists have found that a structural defect in skin cells can contribute to allergy development, including skin and food allergies, traditionally thought primarily to be a dysfunction of the immune system.

Among the many new findings presented at the EAACI-WAO World Allergy and Asthma Congress 2013 in Milan from 22-26 June 2013 is new Australian research providing proof for pre-birth programming of food allergies, showing that prenatal environmental factors may already determine predispositions for food allergies rather than only genetic factors.

Atopix awarded grant to pursue development of OC459 for atopic dermatitis

Atopix Therapeutics Ltd, a biopharmaceutical company developing a novel class of anti-allergic medicines, has been awarded a £1.7 million grant from the UK Biomedical Catalyst fund to pursue development of OC459 in the treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (a form of eczema).
