Palatin announces completion of patient dosing, database lock in bremelanotide study for ED

Palatin Technologies, Inc. today announced the completion of patient dosing and database lock in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, multiple dose, crossover study of bremelanotide, its subcutaneously administered melanocortin agonist for treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). Palatin expects to report top-line data in the next calendar quarter.

Association for Nutrition to be launched at The Royal Society in London

The launch of Association for Nutrition will take place today at The Royal Society in London. AfN is the professional body for the regulation and registration of nutritionists, embracing those involved in public health, care, food, exercise, policy and those who work with animals. One of the Association's responsibilities is running the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists.

Merck's DULERA Inhalation Aerosol for asthma receives FDA approval

Merck today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved DULERA® (mometasone furoate and formoterol fumarate dihydrate) Inhalation Aerosol, a new fixed-dose combination asthma treatment for patients 12 years of age and older. DULERA is not indicated for the relief of acute bronchospasm. DULERA combines an inhaled corticosteroid (mometasone furoate) with a long-acting beta2-agonist (formoterol fumarate).

UCSD School of Medicine receives $5.3M grant to study effect of weight loss in breast cancer survivors

The University of California, San Diego School of Medicine has received a $5.3 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to conduct and lead a first-of-its-kind, four-year clinical trial to show the effects of weight loss and increased physical activity on quality of life and on co-existing medical conditions in overweight breast cancer survivors.

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced closing of a previously announced sale of an aggregate of $15 million of securities in a registered direct offering. The investors are Deerfield Management Company and other institutional investors. BioSante received net proceeds of approximately $14.2 million after deducting placement agent fees and other offering expenses.

Dapagliflozin as monotherapy demonstrates potential for type 2 diabetes treatment

Findings from a 24-week Phase 3 clinical study published online in the latest issue of Diabetes Care demonstrated that the investigational drug dapagliflozin, administered as a monotherapy, achieved statistically significant mean reductions at 5 mg and 10 mg doses once daily in the primary endpoint of glycosylated hemoglobin levels (HbA1c) in treatment-naïve adult patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes, compared to placebo.

Exercise alone without creatine supplements helps in cardiac rehabilitation

Athletes have been enjoying the benefits of creatine supplements to gain stronger muscles since the 1990s, and the supplement has also proven beneficial among other groups. Could it help cardiac patients regain strength to help with their heart-training workouts as part of rehabilitation? The evidence at this stage suggests not - exercise alone proved a far more powerful tonic for patients in a study out today. The results appear in the journal Clinical Rehabilitation, published by SAGE.

Regulus Therapeutics, sanofi-aventis partner to develop and commercialize microRNA therapeutics

Regulus Therapeutics Inc. and sanofi-aventis announced today that they have entered into a global, strategic alliance to discover, develop, and commercialize microRNA therapeutics. The alliance represents the largest microRNA partnership formed to date, valued at potentially over $750 million, and includes a $25 million upfront fee, a $10 million future equity investment subject to mutual agreement on company valuation, and annual research support for three years with the option to extend two additional years.
