Ranbaxy resolves generic Actos patent litigation

Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited, along with its wholly owned subsidiary Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc. (collectively, "Ranbaxy"), announced today that they have reached an agreement with Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited and Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America resolving outstanding patent litigation related to Ranbaxy's generic equivalent version of Actos® (Pioglitazone Hydrochloride) 15 mg, 30 mg and 45 mg tablets.

Obese type 2 diabetics carry mitochondrial proteins that reduce response to physical exercise

Diet and aerobic exercise are highly effective for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, but not for obese subjects that have developed the disease when very young. A study at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine and Trinity College in Dublin demonstrates that obese subjects between 18 and 25 years of age carry mitochondrial proteins and genes that work abnormally and that these anomalies contribute to generating insulin resistance and a reduced response to physical exercise.

But a study supported in part by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) underscores the importance of vitamin D and its ability to help the body utilize calcium. The study also may explain why increasing calcium alone isn't always successful in dealing with this problem.

But a study of 300 children with severe obesity by the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, suggest the problem may be more complicated than simply bad diet, overeating, or lack of exercise.

Penn-ICOWHI conference to examine how urban environments affect women's health

Women comprise more than half the population of the nation's cities, are three times as likely as their male counterparts to live alone after the age of 65, and are primary caregivers for their families at all ages and stages of life. The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, with the International Congress of Women's Health Issues, will host "Cities and Women's Health: Global Perspectives," Wednesday, April 7, through Saturday, April 10, on Penn's campus to examine how urban environments affect their health.

Micromet prices public offering at $7.00 per share

Micromet, Inc. announced today the pricing of an underwritten public offering of 10 million shares of common stock at a public offering price of $7.00 per share. The Company has granted the underwriters a 30-day option to purchase an additional 1.5 million shares of common stock from the Company. All of the shares in the offering are being sold by Micromet.
