Shield Therapeutics files IND application with FDA to initiate ST10 Phase 3 study

Shield Therapeutics, an independent specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the development of mineral-derived hospital pharmaceuticals, today announces that it has filed an investigational new drug application with the US Food and Drug Administration to initiate a Phase 3 pivotal study of ST10, its novel oral iron-replacement therapy, for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in pre-dialysis patients with chronic kidney disease.

WHO: Iron deficiency causes loss of 48,225 disability-adjusted life-years worldwide

Data supporting the need for better recognition of iron deficiency will be presented this week at the United European Gastroenterology Week Congress in Berlin. Iron deficiency is frequently under-diagnosed, resulting in increased hospitalisation, reduced quality of life and higher death rates in patients with comorbid conditions. The WHO has estimated that iron deficiency causes the loss of 48,225 disability-adjusted life-years worldwide, more than is seen with lung cancer.

New research shows that children with an inherited genetic defect in a critical anti-inflammatory pathway have a genetic predisposition to lymphoma.
