Novartis submits JOULFERON MAA to the EMEA

Human Genome Sciences, Inc. today announced that Novartis has submitted a Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) to the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) for approval to market JOULFERON® (albinterferon alfa-2b, known in the United States as ZALBIN™) for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C. In November 2009, HGS submitted a Biologics License Application (BLA) for ZALBIN to the FDA in the United States.

JMC receives NIH grant to establish center of excellence for autoimmune diseases

The Department of Neurology at Jefferson Medical College (JMC) of Thomas Jefferson University has been awarded a multi-million dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the creation of a center of excellence to study autoimmune diseases from basic science research to its translation into clinical applications.

Human Genome Sciences closes public offering of new issued shares

Human Genome Sciences, Inc. today announced the closing of its public offering of 17,825,000 newly issued shares of its common stock at a price to the public of $26.75 per share, which includes 2,325,000 shares sold upon exercise by the underwriters of their option to purchase additional shares. The net proceeds to the Company from the offering are approximately $456.3 million, after deducting the underwriting discount and estimated offering expenses.

Neovacs announces initiation of a Phase IIa clinical study of TNFα Kinoid immunotherapy

Neovacs, a biotechnology company developing proprietary immunotherapies for autoimmune and chronic diseases, today announced the initiation of a Phase IIa clinical study of its TNFα Kinoid immunotherapy in rheumatoid arthritis patients who have ceased to respond to an anti-TNFα monoclonal antibody and who test positive for anti-drug antibodies (ADAs).

Novo Nordisk in-licenses intellectual property rights to IL-21 antibodies

Novo Nordisk A/S and ZymoGenetics, Inc. today announced an agreement where Novo Nordisk in-licenses a fully-human anti-IL21 monoclonal antibody (IL-21 mAb) developed by ZymoGenetics, as well as broad intellectual property rights covering IL-21 mAb and the development of other IL-21 antibodies.

Viral Genetics to develop drug therapies for immune-related disorders and diseases

The University of Colorado and Viral Genetics Inc., recently executed an exclusive license agreement that expands on its previous agreement allowing Viral Genetics to develop treatments for autoimmune diseases, graft rejection, HIV, and cancer based on the work of M. Karen Newell, Ph.D., a professor of biology at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Human Genome Sciences submits BLA for ZALBIN

Human Genome Sciences, Inc. today announced that it has submitted a Biologics License Application (BLA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for ZALBIN™ (albinterferon alfa-2b) for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C. The BLA submission includes the results of two pivotal Phase 3 clinical trials showing that 900-mcg albinterferon alfa-2b dosed every two weeks met its primary endpoint of non-inferiority to peginterferon alfa-2a (Pegasys) dosed once each week.

LRI awards $3.6 million grants to drive innovative science in lupus and related diseases

The Lupus Research Institute (LRI) today named 12 new grant recipients for 2009. The awards, totaling $3.6 million, recognize innovative work across a broad spectrum of lupus research. All were selected for their creativity, novelty, and potential to drive scientific discovery to ultimately prevent, treat, and cure the complex disease of systemic lupus.

Medical advances abound while surgeons report concerns about medical errors

The Wall Street Journal reports on "20 health-care advances to give thanks for this Thanksgiving." Among the most key: "Life expectancy in the U.S. reached an all-time high of 77.9 years in 2007, the latest year for which statistics are available, continuing a long upward trend. (That's 75.3 years for men and 80.4 years for women.) ... Death rates dropped significantly for eight of the 15 leading causes of death in the U.S., including cancer, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, accidents, diabetes, homicides and pneumonia, from 2006 to 2007."
