A flawed system at the Jacobi Medical Center in New York, which meant that hundreds of women were not informed of the results of their cancer screening tests has resulted in the firing of its executive director just a week after the slip up was discovered.

Australian partnership to rebuild Banda Aceh Hospital

The Australian Government, in partnership with Indonesia and Germany, will further progress the reconstruction of the Zainoel Abidin hospital in Banda Aceh, severely damaged in the Boxing Day tsunami, the Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Bruce Billson, announced Friday (20th May 2005).

A poll of 400 foreign nurses carried out by the King's Fund and the Royal College of Nursing, has found that four in 10 want to leave Britain, and because they feel undervalued compared with their British colleagues there is a real possibility that thousands of nurses from overseas could quit the NHS in London.

Nutritional composition of a mother’s breast milk may depend not just on her diet - but on her genes

“It is well known that genes control the nutrient levels in cow’s milk” said Richard B. Weinberg, M.D. “But until now, no one has considered how genes might affect human breast milk. This is the first study to demonstrate a genetic effect on human lactation.” The results were presented today at Digestive Disease Week 2005 in Chicago, Ill.

Six out of ten first-time mothers who had a prolonged labour say that the experience will affect them for life

A team of Swedish researchers, led by Astrid Nystedt from Umea University, studied 84 women who had experienced prolonged labour with assisted vaginal or caesarean delivery. They then compared their experiences with 171 women who had had normal deliveries.
