Pfizer announces suspension of osteoarthritis clinical program for tanezumab

Pfizer Inc. announced today the suspension of the osteoarthritis clinical program for the investigational compound tanezumab following a request by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The worldwide suspension – which is effective immediately – follows a small number of reports of tanezumab patients experiencing the worsening of osteoarthritis leading to joint replacement.

Spanish scientists propose human amniotic membrane as new tool for repairing damaged articular cartilage

Spanish scientists have proposed using human amniotic membrane as a new tool for repairing damaged human articular cartilage, which heals very poorly because of its low capacity for self-repair. Their research, published in the journal Cell and Tissue Banking, shows that the cellular density of the cartilage synthesised could be greater than that of the body's own natural cartilage.

Recommended supplementation not sufficient to normalise vitamin D levels in RA patients: Study

Two separate studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with a range of rheumatic diseases, with over half of all patients having below the 'normal' healthy levels of vitamin D (48-145 nmol/L) in their bodies. A further study assessing response to vitamin D supplementation found that taking the recommended daily dose did not normalise vitamin D levels in rheumatic disease patients.

Alcohol consumption is associated with a significantly reduced risk of developing several arthritic conditions including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and spondylarthropathy, according to results of a new study presented today at EULAR 2010, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Rome, Italy.

Novartis cancels Emisphere Technologies' Convertible Promissory Note

Emisphere Technologies, Inc. today announced that it has entered into an expanded relationship with Novartis Pharma AG pursuant to which Novartis has cancelled the Company's Convertible Promissory Note. The Note was originally issued to Novartis on December 1, 2004 in connection with the Research Collaboration and Option License Agreement between the parties of that date and was originally due December 1, 2009. Previously, Novartis had agreed to extend the maturity date to June 4, 2010.

An advanced type of cancer radiation is more successful than traditional radiation in avoiding "dry mouth" when treating head and neck cancers, but it is unknown whether the treatment is better or worse at reducing the size of tumors, according to a new comparative effectiveness review funded by HHS' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Mayo Clinic research reveals increase in incidence of rheumatoid arthritis in women

The incidence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in women has risen during the period of 1995 to 2007, according to a newly published study by researchers from the Mayo Clinic. This rise in RA follows a 4-decade period of decline and study authors speculate environmental factors such as cigarette smoking, vitamin D deficiency, and lower dose synthetic estrogens in oral contraceptives may be the source of the increase.

POZEN receives milestone payment from AstraZeneca for FDA approval of VIMOVO

POZEN Inc., announced today the receipt of a $20 million milestone payment from AstraZeneca for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of VIMOVO (naproxen and esomeprazole magnesium) delayed-release tablets on April 30th. POZEN will transfer ownership of the Investigational New Drug application and New Drug Application for VIMOVO to AstraZeneca over the next few weeks.

ACOEM publishes new medical treatment guidelines for hip and groin disorders

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine today published new medical treatment guidelines for providing care to workers with injuries and disorders of the hip and groin. The new guidelines, which represent the latest chapter in ACOEM's comprehensive publication Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines, are available on line now via ACOEM's APG-I web application; a print version will be available in the fall of 2010, when the Third Edition hard-copy of Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines is published.
