The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved vandetanib to treat adult patients with late-stage (metastatic) medullary thyroid cancer who are ineligible for surgery and who have disease that is growing or causing symptoms.

New risk calculator predicts risk of postoperative complications for bariatric surgery patients

A new risk calculator can predict the risk of postoperative complications occurring for individual bariatric surgery patients, according to a study published in the March issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. The risk calculator will help in surgical decision-making and will help patients better understand what they can expect during recovery in order to prepare for a bariatric operation.

Merck's VICTRELIS phase III study results against HCV presented at EASL annual meeting

Merck, known as MSD outside of the United States and Canada, announced results from several new data analyses from the pivotal Phase III studies evaluating the addition of its investigational oral protease inhibitor VICTRELIS to peginterferon alfa-2b and ribavirin in adult patients with chronic hepatitis C virus genotype 1 infection.

Medwell announces service agreement with Spectral Diagnostics

Medwell Capital Corp. today announced that the service agreement under which Medwell provides clinical, regulatory and capital markets consulting services to Spectral Diagnostics has been increased to $1.5 million per year, from $1.0 million, effective January 2011, in exchange for an increased level of service.

Medwell acquires ownership and control over 6,449,501 common shares of Spectral

Spectral Diagnostics Inc., a Phase III company developing the first theranostic treatment for severe sepsis and septic shock, and Medwell Capital Corp., today jointly announced a non-brokered agreement whereby Medwell and a consortium of buyers purchased in private transactions 12,449,501 common shares and 962,500 common share purchase warrants of Spectral from GrowthWorks Canadian Fund Ltd., representing 15.6% of the issued and outstanding shares.

Sepsis, a life-threatening bacterial infection of the blood, is an unwanted and costly complication to patients and the health care system. New research at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School has identified major elective surgeries in which sepsis occurs most often post-procedure, along with extenuating conditions such as age, gender and type of hospital that increase the risk for sepsis.

Despite significant advances made during the last several years, most Americans view the care delivered in America today as merely adequate - with 20 percent rating care as poor compared to only 8 percent who rated care as excellent. Americans expressed rising concern about hospital acquired infections, sepsis and other preventable conditions, according to new research released today by the Partnership for Quality Care.

Tifacogin administration shows no treatment benefit in patients with severe CAP

Use of the blood clot-inhibiting medication tifacogin does not appear to improve outcomes of patients with severe community-acquired pneumonia, according to a study conducted by researchers from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The drug had shown some potential benefit in the sCAP subgroup of an earlier trial involving sepsis patients.
