Euthymics's EB-1010 effective in treatment of major depressive disorder: Study

Euthymics Bioscience, Inc. today will present Phase II clinical data demonstrating that its lead product candidate EB-1010, a next-generation antidepressant, is effective for treating major depressive disorder (MDD) based on multiple standard measures of outcome for depression. EB-1010 also improved measures of anhedonia, a hallmark symptom of MDD, which is characterized by the inability to experience pleasure.

It is unlikely that different types of depression can be combined to one single disease called Major Depression. When testing the efficacy of antidepressants or psychotherapy, clinicians should make an attempt to specify the subtypes of depression and to combine antidepressants and psychotherapy in a sequential approach.

Denmark grants marketing authorization for SUMAVEL DosePro Needle-Free Delivery System

Zogenix, Inc. and Desitin Pharmaceuticals GmbH today announced that the Danish Medicines Agency of Denmark has approved the Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) for SUMAVEL® DosePro™ (sumatriptan injection) Needle-Free Delivery System. Denmark is the first country in Europe to grant marketing authorization for SUMAVEL DosePro for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, with or without aura, and the acute treatment of cluster headache.

Research reveals tricyclic anti-depressants increase risk of CVD

Research that followed nearly 15,000 people in Scotland has shown that a class of older generation anti-depressant is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The study showed that tricyclic anti-depressants were associated with a 35% increased risk of CVD, but that there was no increased risk with the newer anti-depressants such as the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Depressed and suicidal individuals have low levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their blood and saliva. They also have substances in their spinal fluid that suggest there is increased inflammation in the brain. These findings could help to develop new methods for diagnosing and treating suicidal patients.

Neuralstem, Inc. announced that it has filed an Investigational New Drug (IND) application with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin two Phase I safety trials to test NSI-189, its first small molecule compound, for the treatment of major depression.
