Indiana campaign "Get tested for HIV"

Indiana Health officials estimate that 25 percent of persons infected with HIV don't know it.  The Indiana State Department of Health is promoting HIV awareness throughout June and July with the "Get Tested for HIV" campaign.

"Get Tested for HIV" is an educational campaign on HIV that encourages those at risk for infection to get tested for the virus and to receive counseling.

According to the March 2004 Quarterly HIV/STD report by the State Department of Health, there are currently 4,094 people in Indiana identified as being infected with HIV

"Knowledge is one of our best weapons against the spread of HIV," said Michael Butler, director of the State Department of Health's HIV/STD Division. "That is why it is so important to get people at risk for infection with HIV tested and to provide them counseling."

The Office of Minority Health at the State Department of Health has awarded 38 mini-grants to local organizations and churches to support their efforts to provide HIV testing and counseling services to Hoosiers. Funding was made available through the State Territorial Minority HIV/AIDS Demonstration Program.

"One of the goals of the HIV/AIDS Demonstration Program is to help build the capacity of these organizations to plan local events as part of the 'Get Tested for HIV' campaign," said Danielle Patterson, director of the Office of Minority Health.

A list of "Get Tested for HIV" events is available on the State Department of Health's Web site at: www.statehealth.in.gov.
