Village in China under quarantine following outbreak of foot and mouth disease

According to officials in China strict quarantine measures are being imposed in a village in east China's Jiangsu Province, which has experienced an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

China's Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed two outbreaks of the highly contagious viral disease, which affects cattle, pigs, sheep and other livestock, one in Jiangsu, the other in northwestern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

It seems the disease has affected twenty cows on a farm in a village, near Beigou in Jiangsu and according to the deputy mayor veterinary authorities ordered an immediate disinfection as well as the inoculation of cattle in the area.

The farm has been quarantined and 100 cows in the area culled.

Seven other cattle farms are also under quarantine and under close medical attention.

An around the clock check is in place to disinfect people who enter or leave the village, in an attempt to curb the outbreak.
